The rhythmic squeak of chalk on a blackboard echoes in my memory. It’s the sound of SK Seri Permai.
This isn’t just any school. SK Seri Permai in Bayan Baru has a story. A story of relocation and innovation. It started its journey along Jalan Bayan Lepas. Close to the Penang International Airport. But airport expansion forced a move in the late 1970s. The old buildings now house the Malaysia Airport Training Centre.
Imagine the upheaval. Students teachers staff. All relocating. A new chapter began on Jalan Tengah. Across from Giant Hypermarket Bayan Baru. A convenient location served by Rapid Penang buses 302 and 308. But the spirit of SK Seri Permai remained.
The school’s history is rich. It began as the Bayan Lepas English School in 1954. Responding to the need for English-medium primary education. It started small just one Standard One class with 40 pupils. Growing steadily over the years it became SRKSP. Then finally SK Seri Permai in 1997.
The school isn’t just about its past. SK Seri Permai is about looking forward. In 2023 it achieved international recognition. Awarded as one of the top three schools globally for its innovative SnET 2.0 desks. These desks solve the problem of heavy school bags. They are equipped with drawers and mini shelves. Developed with IKM Sungai Petani students. These desks cost around RM100 per unit. A fraction of the market price.
This isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to adaptation resilience and innovation. A place where learning thrives. A place where history and progress intertwine. The squeak of that chalk on that blackboard. It’s the sound of SK Seri Permai’s ongoing success. A school that embraces change. A school that continuously improves. A truly remarkable place.
