Founded in 1939 SJK (C) Ming Chih stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Chinese education in Johor. Originally located in the coastal village of Patah Pedang Minyak Beku this humble school served the children of the local Chinese community. Imagine the dedication of those early founders who tirelessly worked to establish a place of learning amidst challenging circumstances. They secured land a plot 100 feet wide and 132 feet long donated by Encik Lim Choo and his son Encik Lim Kee. The school’s early years were marked by resilience. World War II brought temporary closure but SJK (C) Ming Chih reopened after the Japanese surrender. In 1952 it became a government-aided Chinese primary school.
The school faced a significant challenge in the late 1980s. The number of students began to decline annually. By 2005 only three remained. This was due to the school’s remote location and limited job opportunities. Young people moved to cities seeking better lives. The school was facing closure. In 2004 the Ministry of Education approved its relocation. A relocation committee was formed to find a new suitable location. Eventually SJK (C) Ming Chih found a new home in Horizon Hills Nusajaya Johor Bahru.
The move marked a turning point. On December 1 2009 SJK (C) Ming Chih reopened at its new address No 5 Jalan Hijauan 2. The school thrived. By January 3 2010 enrollment had soared to 510 students with 32 teachers and two administrative staff. A fundraising dinner was held to improve facilities. Over the years the school continued to grow. In 2011 enrollment reached 675 students. The increase in students necessitated a new multi-purpose hall which was completed in 2014. A new school building was also added in 2021.
