Gazing upon Siyavușpașa Kasrı, one might hear whispers of its intriguing past. This elegant pavilion, also known as Havuzlu Köşk (Pool Pavilion), holds a special place in Istanbul’s history. Siyavușpașa Kasrı’s story begins with a powerful figure, Grand Vizier Siyavuș Pasha. He served Sultan Mehmed III three times, a testament to his influence and political prowess. Built around 1571-1572, Siyavușpașa Kasrı reflects the opulence and architectural brilliance of the 16th-century Ottoman Empire. Although the exact architect remains unknown, its design, elegance, and historical context point towards the masterful hand of Mimar Sinan. The pavilion’s unique setting adds to its allure. Siyavușpașa Kasrı sits gracefully in the middle of a large pool, connected to the shore by a charming bridge. This placement earned it the name Havuzlu Köşk, emphasizing its watery embrace. The pavilion itself is a testament to Ottoman civil architecture. Siyavușpașa Kasrı features a large divanhane (reception hall), a smaller adjacent room, a restroom, and a loft above. Despite renovations over the centuries, the core structure retains its original 16th-century character. Imagine the scene: Siyavușpașa Pasha, relaxing in his pavilion amidst the tranquil waters, surrounded by lush gardens and the gentle murmur of fountains. The surrounding pool area, enclosed by a sturdy retaining wall, provided a sense of privacy and exclusivity. The pool’s edge boasted a stone balustrade, remnants of which can still be traced today. In one corner, a stone platform, perhaps a kameriye (garden pavilion), rested upon four corbels, providing a perfect spot for contemplation. Towering trees lined the pool, offering shade and completing the idyllic picture. Inside Siyavușpașa Kasrı, the main hall preserves its original layout and domes. Stalactites support the corner half-domes, and arches grace the spaces between, creating a visually stunning octagonal form within. Eight flat pendentives then transition to the main dome, showcasing the architectural mastery of the time. Although original decorations like marble ornamentation and the fireplace are lost to time, surviving niche arches and corner bricks hint at the pavilion’s past grandeur. The smaller room holds its own charm, featuring distinctive arched profiles and a ribbed pattern on the walls. The ceiling, shaped like a barrel vault, adds to the room’s unique ambiance. Although time has taken its toll, and some elements like the main dome’s upper structure have undergone changes, the pavilion still stands proud. Its location, serene setting, and elegant architecture continue to captivate, whispering tales of Ottoman grandeur and the enduring legacy of Siyavuș Pasha.
