Could this unassuming spot really have been a hub of activity in the 1800s? You might be surprised to learn that we’re standing at the Site of the Scyene Meeting Place Plaque. It marks a location rich in history. In the early 1840s, long before this plaque or any buildings graced this land, settlers would gather under a mighty tree. They came to discuss matters of the day, make decisions, and forge a sense of community. As the 1850s dawned, the community outgrew its humble meeting spot, and a series of two-story frame buildings arose. The Scyene Meeting Place, as it came to be known, became a center for various activities. This site hosted the Masonic Lodge, church services, elections, and lively social gatherings. Interestingly, the Scyene Meeting Place also held one of the first public school sessions in all of Dallas County. In a twist of history, the infamous outlaw Belle Starr, was a pupil in that very school during her childhood. However, the tide turned for Scyene in 1872. The Texas & Pacific Railroad made the fateful decision to bypass the town. Without the railroad’s access, Scyene dwindled, its bustling life fading into the past. But the Scyene Meeting Place didn’t fade entirely. The Woodmen of the World and other groups continued to meet within the community building. Even school sessions continued until 1927. Today, all that remains is this plaque. It’s a reminder of the vibrant life that once thrived here at the Site of the Scyene Meeting Place.
