Beneath the Texas sun, at the Site of Samuel Huston College Plaque, lies a story of resilience and transformation. This plaque commemorates a pivotal institution in Austin’s history. Samuel Huston College, a beacon of hope for African Americans, once thrived on this very ground. Established in 1876 as a school for Black youth, it eventually found a permanent home in Austin in 1900. Named after an Iowa farmer who generously donated $9,000, the college quickly grew under the leadership of President Reuben S. Lovinggood. The college offered a wide range of programs, from preparatory and college normal courses to music, housekeeping, and even agriculture. By 1948, enrollment had soared to 700 students, hailing from across the country. Samuel Huston College wasn’t just an academic institution; it was a cultural hub. Its renowned 32-voice a cappella choir graced the stages of churches throughout the region and even embarked on a goodwill tour of Mexico in 1947. The college orchestra and the Collegians band further enriched the vibrant campus life. The college also hosted the Samuel Huston College Artists Series, bringing luminaries like Duke Ellington to Austin. Drama and debate flourished, and six chapters of national Greek-letter fraternities and sororities fostered a strong sense of community. The original campus spanned six acres, later expanding to fifteen. Burrowes Hall, the main building, was a testament to the college’s perseverance. Started in 1883, its construction was hampered by financial difficulties. Students themselves canvassed the city for furniture, demonstrating their commitment to their education. The Eliza Dee Industrial Home for girls, located across the street, provided domestic skills training and a nurturing environment. Despite its vibrant legacy, Samuel Huston College faced financial struggles. In 1952, it merged with Tillotson College to form Huston-Tillotson College. The Samuel Huston campus was eventually razed, but the plaque stands as a reminder of its enduring impact. The Site of Samuel Huston College Plaque isn’t just a marker; it’s a portal to a rich past. It tells a story of a community that valued education, embraced the arts, and persevered against adversity. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Samuel Huston College, which continues to inspire generations through the legacy of Huston-Tillotson University.
