They arrived in Texas from Tennessee in 1872 seeking a fresh start. Legend has it that their son, Bedford Forest Galloway, was born in a covered wagon at nearby Duck Creek. In 1874, they purchased 101 acres of land, where Benjamin, a skilled farmer, built a cabin while a two-room house was constructed. He raised horses, mules, and cattle, establishing a life in the heart of Texas. However, tragedy struck the family in 1883. Eliza and their newborn twin sons passed away. Benjamin later married Amanda Jane Miller, and they expanded the homestead with a 1½-story addition. Their home became a testament to their enduring spirit. Bedford, following in his father’s footsteps, became a prominent figure in Mesquite, serving as mayor from 1927 to 1940. The Galloway Farmstead, a symbol of their legacy, was moved to Sunnyvale in 1973 to protect it from encroaching urban development. This plaque serves as a reminder of the Galloway family and their contribution to the growth of this area.
