Can you imagine a time before bridges spanned the Bosphorus? The Sirkeci Ferry was the lifeline of Istanbul, shuttling people and goods between Europe and Asia. Sirkeci Ferry has a rich history. It played a crucial role in the city’s development. Let’s delve into its story. The Sirkeci Ferry’s history is intertwined with the Şehir Hatları (City Lines). Şehir Hatları, founded in 1844, started as the Hazine-i Hassa Ferries Administration under the Ottoman Navy Ministry. These ferries initially served routes like Sirkeci-Princes’ Islands, Sirkeci-Pendik, and even connected Istanbul to ports like Izmit and Tekirdağ. The name Şehir Hatları didn’t appear until 1937 after a series of name changes and mergers. Another key player, Şirket-i Hayriye, operated ferries on the Bosphorus starting in 1851. In 1945, Şirket-i Hayriye was nationalized, and its operations were absorbed into Şehir Hatları. This consolidation brought all of Istanbul’s ferry transportation under one roof. Today, the Sirkeci Ferry remains a vital part of Istanbul’s transportation network. It connects Sirkeci to Harem across the Bosphorus, a route running from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm daily. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes. It’s more than just a ferry ride. It’s a journey through time, a testament to the city’s enduring connection to the sea.
