Here lies General Sir Loftus William Otway. He was born on April 28, 1775 and he died on June 7, 1854. This is his tomb in Highgate Cemetery.

Sir Loftus was an experienced cavalry commander. He served the British forces during the Peninsula War. His service stretched from 1796 to 1819. He served under Sir John Moore in the Corunna Campaign. He also served under Wellington.

Otway also spent time training Portuguese troops. He served in Ireland during the 1798 rebellion. He even saw service in Canada.

Born in County Tipperary, Ireland, Loftus came from a military family. His father was an officer and his brother became an admiral. Loftus joined the army at 21. He quickly rose through the ranks. He became a lieutenant within months.

His early career included suppressing the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland. He was present at the Battle of Vinegar Hill. There, his unit rode down the rebels.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Otway continued his ascent. He became a captain in 1798. He was a major in 1803. He transferred to the 8th Dragoons in 1804. A period in Canada followed in the adjutant-generals office.

Returning to Europe in 1807, Otway volunteered for service in Portugal and Spain. He was attached to Sir Arthur Wellesley’s army. During the retreat to Corunna, Otway distinguished himself. He captured many enemy troops. This included a French general.

After being evacuated from Corunna, Otway commanded a Portuguese cavalry brigade. He fought at the Battle of Busaco in 1810. He also secured a victory at Campo Mayor in 1811.

In 1815, the Prince Regent knighted Otway in London. He was made a Companion of the Bath. He became a Spanish Knight of the Order of Charles III in 1822.

His epitaph reads “Brave and gentle, honourable, generous and true.” It speaks of his distinguished service. It mentions his kindness and gallant spirit.

Sir Loftus William Otway’s life was one of military service and honor. He served his country well. He left behind a legacy of bravery and distinction. Now, his story echoes here. It is in this quiet corner of Highgate Cemetery. He rests in peace after a life of service.
