Remember the name William Leslie Bowles. He was the artist who designed this statue. Bowles was born in 1885 in Leichhardt NSW. Here we are before the Sir John Monash Statue.

Sir John Monash was a remarkable Australian. He excelled as a soldier and engineer. This statue commemorates his extraordinary life. Monash was born in Melbourne in 1865. He gained degrees in arts, law, and engineering from the University of Melbourne. Before World War I, he worked on construction projects.

At Gallipoli, Monash commanded the 4th Infantry Brigade. Later in France, he led the 3rd Division. His military skills and leadership led to his promotion to lieutenant general in 1918. He commanded the Australian Army Corps.

After the war, Monash contributed to Australia’s development. He became general manager of the State Electricity Commission. He helped develop the brown-coal deposits of the Yallourn fields in Gippsland. Monash also served as vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

A monument to Monash was proposed in 1932. This was the year after his death. The Melbourne City Council and public subscriptions funded it. Bowles designed the statue, but the bronze was cast in Italy. World War II delayed its completion until 1950.

Over a thousand people gathered here on November 12, 1950. They watched the Governor-General William McKell unveil the Sir John Monash Statue. Prime Minister Menzies attended as well. McKell described Monash as Australia’s greatest citizen and soldier. He said Monash’s achievements were examples of sacrifice and service. Monash’s name would live on in Australian history. His career proved Australian military leaders could rank with the world’s best.

Look closely at the bronze statue of Sir John Monash. It stands on a granite plinth. The statue’s dimensions are impressive 276 x 161 x 371 cm. An inscription reads, “This statue was unveiled on the 12th November 1950”. It honors General Sir John Monash. He was a soldier, engineer, and commander of the Australian Corps in France.

Monash displayed great military skills. He possessed a powerful intellect and inspiring leadership qualities. He impressed his soldiers and higher command. By the 1920s, Monash was considered the greatest living Australian. He became integral to the ANZAC legend.

Remember Sir John Monash. He was a gifted student. He was also a part-time militia officer. He was appointed to command the 4th Infantry Brigade at the outbreak of war.
He led his Australians through victorious actions. This statue stands as a tribute to his enduring legacy. It reminds us of his contributions to both military and civil life.
