Sir George Monoux, a wealthy London merchant who once held the esteemed title of Lord Mayor, established almshouses here in Walthamstow. He wanted to provide for the poor of the parish. Alongside the almshouses, he built a school, laying the foundation for what would become Sir George Monoux College. For centuries, it served as a grammar school for boys. The world outside changed, but the school remained dedicated to its purpose. Imagine the transformation from the quiet halls of the grammar school in the 1800s to the introduction of a senior school system in 1968. Then in 1986, another significant change: Sir George Monoux College opened its doors to girls, becoming the co-educational sixth form college it is today.
