Tucked away amidst the ancient trees of City Park, the Sipeki-villa stands as a pastel pink testament to Hungarian Art Nouveau. This often-overlooked gem, designed by the pioneering architect Ödön Lechner, possesses a unique charm. The Sipeki-villa was built in 1907 for Béla Sipeki-Balás. He was the bailiff of Zala county. Its towering chimney and gracefully rounded winter garden hint at the beauty within. The ornate facade, reminiscent of a gingerbread house, showcases Lechner’s distinctive style. Sipeki-Balás, a man of distinction and foresight, left no heirs to his beloved villa. Upon his death in 1944, his will stipulated a unique beneficiary: the Hungarian Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted. They have since made the Sipeki-villa their headquarters. While the exterior now shows signs of wear, the interior remains a treasure trove of art and architectural detail. A magnificent staircase, adorned with vibrant Zsolnay ceramics, winds its way through the villa. These colorful tiles, a hallmark of Hungarian Art Nouveau, add a touch of whimsy to the grand design. The Sipeki-villa stands not just as a beautiful building but as a symbol of generosity and vision. It serves as a reminder that even amidst changing times, beauty and purpose can endure. The legacy of Sipeki-Balás lives on. His villa continues to serve a vital role in the community. It has provided a home and a haven for those who navigate the world without sight.
