Whispers of ancient battles danced on the warm Adriatic breeze. We stand before Šipan a jewel in the Elaphiti archipelago. This isn’t just an island. It’s a living testament to centuries of history.

Šipan’s story stretches back to the Illyrian era. Roman villae rusticae dot the landscape. Evidence of a rich past unfolds before you. The island’s name once Tauris linked it to a famous battle of 47 BC. Some believe it was fought near Šipan not Šćedar. This is still debated by historians.

The island’s name evolved. From the Latin Juppana to the Italian Giuppana it finally became Šipan in 1371. The British Navy even called it Zupana during the French Revolutionary Wars.

The 15th century marked the start of Šipan’s close relationship with Dubrovnik. The influential Sagroević-Stjepović-Krivonosović-Skočibuha family played a pivotal role. Though some trace their roots to Herzegovina others say their name appeared on Šipan before Bosnia fell to the Turks in 1463. Two brothers Antun and Stijepo are mentioned in the early 16th century. Their descendants were renowned sailors navigating the Mediterranean and beyond. Their daring voyages were risky. Only two sons Vice Stjepović-Skočibuha and Marin survived. Vice became a prominent merchant. Marin a priest in Naples and Dubrovnik.

Šipan joined the Republic of Ragusa in 1426. Vice Stjepović-Skočibuha’s house still stands in Suđurađ. Its enduring presence is a tangible link to the past.

The island played a defensive role during the Homeland War. A fort on Velji Vrh served as protection against the Yugoslav People’s Army. This fort had seen action under the Austro-Hungarian Empire Nazi Germany and Yugoslav Partisans. Remnants of minefields linger as a chilling reminder of conflict.

Šipan’s economy flourished under the Republic of Ragusa. Shipbuilding seamanship olive cultivation fishing and viticulture thrived. A major earthquake and fire in 17th-century Dubrovnik devastated the island’s economy. Its reliance on Dubrovnik hampered recovery. The Great Depression brought further hardship. But recent investments have revitalized Šipan’s fortunes though its economic ties to Dubrovnik remain strong.

For centuries Šipan’s fishing culture was vibrant. The islanders were known for fishing European pilchards and tuna. This fishing industry played a vital role in the island’s economy. Tourism also plays an important part. Despite lacking tourist attractions until 1980 Šipan now attracts many visitors. A unique addition is a film school operating for 20 years.

The highest point Velji Vrh reaches 243 meters. The slightly lower Kameni Luk crest is also notable. Olives figs almonds carobs and citrus flourish. Šipan holds a Guinness World Record for the most olive trees relative to its size and population. Over 300,000 olive trees cover this stunning island. The island is also famous for its variety of palm trees.

Šipan’s tranquil beauty and rich history await you. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and enduring charm. Explore the island’s hidden corners. Discover its unique character. Šipan will leave an indelible mark on your soul.
