“Did you know the Singapore Island Country Club began with a judge eager to play golf?

Let’s step back to 1887. Justice John Tankerville Goldney arrived in Singapore. He brought his clubs but found no golf course. Goldney and Mr. R N Bland created a plan. They selected the first nine tees and greens at Farrer Park.

The Golf Club opened on June 17, 1891. Governor Sir Cecil Clementi Smith graced the event. Goldney drove the first ball. Golf had finally arrived in Singapore.

Interest grew quickly. However only the British could join. Ladies could play only on Tuesdays. A clubhouse was built in 1894 for $3,000.

In 1905, the first Singapore Open Championship took place. Entrants came from all Singapore golf clubs. Charles Valentine Miles won. He was a lawyer from Rodyk and Davidson.

John Middleton Sime sought a new location in 1920. He knew urban development was coming. Work began to clear the jungle. In 1924, the 18-hole Bukit Course opened. It cost over $45,000. Members donated generously.

The Island Club began in 1932. It marked a big moment. It was the first multi-racial club in Singapore. It included sports beyond golf. President Chan Sze Jin said it was the first non-racial country club.

In 1963, the Royal Singapore Golf Club merged with the Island Club. The new club was named the Singapore Island Country Club. This ended colonial elitism. Membership was no longer based on race or social class.

The Singapore Island Country Club was unique. It had two separate clubhouses. One was at Sime, the other at Bukit.

The Singapore Island Country Club crest combined elements of both clubs. The lion and coconut palm from the Royal. The white-bellied sea eagle from the Island Club. A belt joined them to signify the merger.

In 2011, the Singapore Island Country Club unveiled a new clubhouse. It featured new dining options. It also had changing rooms with lockers. Hot and cold pools, a sauna, and steam rooms were added.

The Singapore Island Country Club celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 2023. This marked 60 years. A gala dinner and golf tournaments were held.

In September 2023, The Bukit clubhouse officially opened. It offers dining and entertainment. It complements the Island clubhouse.

The Singapore Island Country Club stands as a testament to Singapore’s sporting history. It embodies inclusivity. It offers world-class facilities. It continues to evolve. It honors its rich heritage.”
