“What started with just 105 students in a colonial house is now a sprawling 36-acre campus.” That’s the story of Singapore American School. It is a non-profit independent school. The school sits in the Woodlands area of Singapore. It offers an American-based curriculum. This caters to students from preschool through high school.
Singapore American School holds a special place in Singapore’s educational history. It was founded in 1956. It was one of Singapore’s first international schools. Initially intended for American children, it quickly grew. Today, Singapore American School welcomes over 4000 students. They come from over 65 nationalities.
Back in 1956, the American Association of Malaya established Singapore American School. The idea was to provide an alternative. American executives, missionaries, and diplomats did not want to send their children to boarding schools. The school began in a colonial house on Rochalie Drive. Early classes took place in former bedrooms. The garage became a science lab. Servants’ quarters transformed into music and preschool spaces. Assemblies were held in the dining room. A local family even continued to live on the property. Their chickens roamed the grounds.
The school quickly outgrew its original location. It moved to a purpose-built facility on King’s Road in 1962. By 1971, the student population had grown so much. Younger students were moved to temporary sites at Alexandra Junior School and Gillman Barracks. In 1973, a new K-8 campus opened on Ulu Pandan Road. The King’s Road campus became an expanded high school. The school established the Baytree elementary campus in Clementi during 1990-91. This provided relief for the long wait-list. Finally, in 1996, the Woodlands campus opened. All Singapore American School students were together again.
Singapore American School faced space constraints by the late 1980s. Enrollment outstripped capacity. The government offered three sites for a new campus. Singapore American School selected a large plot in Woodlands. The campus could accommodate 3700 students. The Woodlands campus opened in 1996 at the cost of $150 million.
Singapore American School offers a wide range of classes. These include standard academic subjects. Foreign languages, music, and sports are also available. The high school offers over 20 AP courses.
