The elegant dome of the Sinan Pasha Mosque beckons. Its story unfolds before you.

This stunning Ottoman mosque stands proudly in a bustling Istanbul neighborhood. Built by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan it holds a special place in the city’s history. Commissioned by the admiral Sinan Pasha the mosque’s construction began after the admiral’s death in 1554. The foundation inscription proudly proclaims its completion in November or December 1555. A second inscription on the courtyard fountain confirms a completion date between 1555 and 1556.

The Sinan Pasha Mosque was designed as part of a larger complex. This included a mosque a madrasa a mekteb and a hamam. Sadly only the mosque and madrasa survive today. The other structures were lost to road construction in the 1950s.

The mosque’s architecture is quite remarkable. Its dome spans 12.6 meters a testament to Sinan’s skill. Notice how the dome rests on six arches supported by two free-standing hexagonal piers. This design is similar to the earlier Uc Serefeli Mosque in Edirne. Both mosques share the unique feature of a dome supported in this way.

Unlike many of Mimar Sinan’s other mosques the Sinan Pasha Mosque is less ornate inside. This is because Sinan Pasha died before its completion. The original painted decoration is sadly gone. However the simple white marble minbar still remains beautiful.

The Sinan Pasha Mosque is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to Ottoman architecture skill and the life of a great admiral. It’s a fascinating piece of Istanbul’s rich heritage. Its unique features and its history make it a must-see for any visitor. You can almost feel the echoes of prayers and stories whispered within these walls. The Sinan Pasha Mosque a true hidden gem.
