Forgotten by many yet cherished by a dedicated few. That’s Sin Heng San Teng Temple. This temple stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit.

Sin Heng San Teng Tua Pek Kong’s story began long ago. Its history dates back to 1893. You can see this etched on the temple’s oldest incense burner. But the present-day structure was built in the 1950s. It was rebuilt sometime before 1969.

The temple is near Kheam Hock Road. It is next to the PIE. The forest largely conceals it. The temple sits atop a hill. It is only accessible by foot.

Sin Heng San Teng Temple got its name from a cemetery. This cemetery surrounded the temple. It was the old Sin Heng San Teng cemetery. Hokkien Huay Kuan once owned this cemetery. As Bukit Brown Cemetery expanded, it absorbed Sin Heng San Teng. Locals also call it the Lao Sua Temple. Lao Sua means Old Hill.

Interestingly, the original Heng San Teng temple was built in 1828. It was located along Jalan Bukit Merah. The predecessor of Hokkien Huay Kuan built it. Sadly, a fire destroyed it in 1992. One statue survived this fire. It was a statue of Tua Pek Kong. Today, it is worshipped in Kim Lan Beo temple.

Bukit Brown Cemetery was abandoned in 1973. By then, over 100000 tombs were there. Nature began reclaiming the area. Many tombs disappeared into the jungle. The Sin Heng San Teng Temple almost suffered the same fate.

However, a group of volunteers stepped in. Around 2012, they began restoring Sin Heng San Teng. They replaced the roof. They cleared undergrowth. The volunteers restored the dragon painting on the back wall. They also made regular offerings to Tua Pek Kong. Tua Pek Kong is the God Of Prosperity. Some volunteers had grown up nearby. They lived in a kampong close to the temple in the 1960s.

Take a closer look at the back wall. You will spot the dragon painting. The Tua Pek Kong statue sits in front of it. Around the temple, you may see gardens. These gardens are planted with flowers and herbs. Sometimes there is a jungle fowl in a cage.

Notice the photographs on the wall. They show the temple’s original state. They show how it looked before restoration.

The temple’s design reflects Chinese Vernacular Temple architecture. This style is from South China. The main deity here is Tua Pek Kong. Throughout Southeast Asia, Tua Pek Kong is believed to bring luck. Devotees often pray for lucky lottery numbers.

Sin Heng San Teng Temple stands as a symbol. It is a symbol of heritage. It is a testament to the power of community. This shows how dedicated individuals can preserve history. They keep its spirit alive for generations to come.
