Established in 1885 Sims Chapel Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Initially named Series Baptist Church it was organized under a brush arbor. Pastor Tony Baker led the congregation. Early officers included Deacon Ed Bailey Jim Byrd Ben Peek Nora Bailey and Willie Preston. Sister Lillie Mae Belcher served as secretary. Sis Jane Heard was the church mother. Later the church acquired land from Mr Sims. This led to the name change to Sims Chapel Baptist Church.
The church played a vital role in the community. It served as one of the Black schools in Newton County. Its cemetery is recognized as a Historic Cemetery of Newton County. In 1915 under Pastor G J Clark the church was rebuilt. Mr Homer Guinn donated land for this project. In 1969 Mr James F Arthur gifted additional land. This expanded the church’s footprint and community impact.
Under Pastor Stafford a second Sunday service was introduced. Various church ministries were reorganized including the Usher Board and choirs. Significant building projects were initiated. These included an annex and church remodeling. Pastor Stafford’s resignation in 1978 due to health reasons marked a transition period. Deacon Irvin Nolley’s 33 years as Chairman of the Deacon Board demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication to the church.
Pastor Calvin English’s tenure from 1979 to 2002 brought further advancements. He appointed Pastor Willie Norman as his assistant. Under his leadership the church received numerous improvements. These included new pulpit furniture pews chandeliers and parking lot improvements. He became a full-time pastor in 1990. New ministries such as Bible Study Vacation Bible School and a Youth Department were established. The church also saw the calling of two ministers Rev Cecil J Rozier and Evangelist Lenora Williams. Further renovations to the foyer and restrooms were completed. The Advisory Board Council and Sister to Sister were introduced.
A significant vision emerged in 1995. This led to a major remodel and expansion of the sanctuary. The transformation was complete by 1996. The church now boasted a larger sanctuary a dining hall an indoor baptismal pool new pews choir chairs stained glass windows a steeple and central heat and air. In 1999 the street was renamed Sims Chapel Road honoring the church’s impact. Pastor English honored as Pastor Emeritus is remembered for his many contributions.
Pastor Cecil J Rozier’s leadership from 2002 to 2022 continued the church’s growth. Several ministries were reorganized. New ones were added including the Children of Zion Choir Junior Usher Board Men’s Ministry and Dance Ministry. A third Sunday service was added in 2004 followed by a first Sunday service. Major renovations to the church exterior were undertaken in 2016. Services were temporarily held at the New Rock Educational Complex. The congregation returned to their newly renovated sanctuary in time for the Homecoming Celebration. The establishment of the church’s Board of Trustees and the Leadership Ministry marked further organizational milestones.
In 2022 Pastor O Quintodd Bryant assumed leadership. The church entered a new era of revival and growth. He re-established ministries oversaw a new media room installation and welcomed many new members. New ministries have been added further strengthening the community impact of Sims Chapel Baptist Church. The rich history of Sims Chapel Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith dedication and perseverance.
