“A century of faith resilience and community” That’s what this plaque proclaims. Before you stands a testament to the Simpson United Methodist Church’s enduring legacy. This isn’t just a plaque it’s a portal to a vibrant history.

Simpson United Methodist Church in Austin Texas. Its story begins not here but in Gregorytown. In 1880 a group of freedmen established Simpson Mission Methodist Episcopal Church. They named it after Bishop Matthew Simpson a Methodist leader abolitionist and political figure. For forty-one years the congregation thrived in Gregorytown.

Then in 1922 they moved to East Austin. This area was undergoing significant demographic shifts. Redlining and white flight led to the almost complete segregation of African Americans in East Austin. Simpson Church became a cornerstone of this community. Initially they worshipped under a tent. Then in 1925 they built a tabernacle a basement structure that still exists today. Former slaves helped build this with remarkable dedication. The building stands as a testament to their determination and faith.

The church grew rapidly exceeding 500 members by 1926. By the 1950s a larger building was needed. The existing tabernacle became the foundation for the new structure. This larger church opened just as the civil rights movement gained momentum. It provided a vital safe space for meetings and political activism. The Austin branch of the NAACP held regular meetings there. Politicians spoke there. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a victory for African Americans the church played a part in that fight.

This plaque commemorates that journey. It represents faith community and resilience. Simpson United Methodist Church is more than a building. It is a living symbol of a community’s strength and perseverance. It’s a place of worship a center for social activism and a beacon of hope for generations. Take a moment to reflect on the story etched not just into the plaque but into the very fabric of East Austin.
