A simple blue plaque. It marks a place of immense significance. This is the Simon Bolivar Blue plaque. It commemorates a pivotal moment in Latin American history.

The Simon Bolivar Blue plaque sits at 4 Duke Street in Marylebone. English Heritage erected it in 2002. The plaque honors Simón Bolívar. He was the Liberator of Latin America.

Bolívar lodged here in 1810. The inscription reads: “Simón Bolívar 1783-1830 Liberator of Latin America lodged here in 1810.”

Who was Simón Bolívar? He was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1783. Bolívar came from a wealthy Creole family. Orphaned young, his uncle raised him. Rodríguez, his tutor, profoundly influenced him. Rodríguez exposed Bolívar to Enlightenment thinkers. Voltaire and Rousseau inspired him. They also inspired the French Revolution.

Bolívar’s stay in London was brief. He arrived in July 1810. He departed in September 1810. Why did he come to London? Caracas had just declared independence from Spanish rule. Bolívar led a diplomatic mission. He sought British support for the new Junta in Caracas. He also wanted support for a fully independent Venezuela.

Bolívar couldn’t secure full British support at that time. London became a hub for his cause. He raised funds here. He recruited volunteers. He bought weapons for the rebel armies.

Bolívar played a crucial role. He liberated Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama. They were all freed from the Spanish Empire. He fought in 472 battles. He traveled 123,000 kilometers on horseback. That’s ten times more than Hannibal. It’s three times more than Napoleon. It’s twice as much as Alexander the Great.

The Simon Bolivar Blue plaque serves as a potent reminder. It is a reminder of one man’s dedication. He wanted to liberate a continent. Though relatively unknown outside Latin America, Bolívar’s impact is undeniable. His legacy lives on in the nations he helped create. So take a moment. Think about the history. Think about the man honored by this Simon Bolivar Blue plaque.
