Simon & Anine Sculpture

Hidden away in Tilst, just outside of Aarhus, Denmark, stand Simon & Anine, a testament to community spirit and artistic vision. Simon & Anine aren’t your typical sculptures. They are towering figures crafted from recycled wood and discarded treasures, brought to life by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo. The story of Simon & Anine begins with tragedy. In 2015, Dambo constructed a giant sculpture named “Simon Selfmade,” a whimsical figure building his own leg. This original Simon stood proudly beside the highway. Sadly, a fierce hurricane swept through the area, tearing Simon apart. The community mourned the loss of their friendly giant, but none more than a young girl named Anine. Determined to bring Simon back, fourteen-year-old Anine started a Facebook group, hoping to raise funds for Simon’s reconstruction. Within just four days, the community rallied together, exceeding their fundraising goal. Touched by Anine’s dedication, Dambo returned to Tilst. He decided to rebuild Simon, not as a replica, but as a symbol of resilience and friendship. The reborn Simon now stands complete, his hammer no longer working on his own leg, but crafting a new companion. This new figure, a testament to the power of community, is named Anine. Simon & Anine now stand together, a heartwarming reminder that even from destruction, something beautiful can emerge. They are a symbol of the resourcefulness and unity of the Tilst community, proving that trash and tragedy can indeed be transformed into treasure. Dambo’s art carries a deeper message, highlighting the importance of community and the potential of recycled materials.
