The towering brick building, with its bright blue and gold facade, stands proud on the South Side of Chicago. This is Simeon Career Academy, a school that has shaped generations of students, some going on to build successful careers while others achieved greatness on the athletic field.
Simeon Career Academy, formerly known as Westcott Vocational High School, opened its doors in 1949. Originally located on South Normal Avenue, the school moved to its current location on South Vincennes Avenue in 1963. The school is named after Neal Ferdinand Simeon, a prominent African-American educator in Chicago.
Simeon is renowned for its impressive athletic legacy. Its basketball team has won numerous state championships, including four consecutive titles from 2009 to 2013. This success has led to many of its athletes securing scholarships to prestigious colleges and a few even making it to the NBA. One of the most famous players is Derrick Rose, who became the first Chicagoan in NBA history to be named MVP, and he once wore Ben Wilson’s retired number 25 jersey, honoring the legacy of the star player who was tragically killed in 1984.
Simeon has also produced a number of successful individuals in various fields. You’ll find former students who have become prominent politicians, musicians, and even professional athletes in other sports besides basketball. The school prides itself on providing a well-rounded education, with a focus on both academic and vocational training. It is no wonder Simeon Career Academy is celebrated as a true pillar in the community, a testament to the South Side’s spirit and dedication to excellence.
