Welcome to Silkeborg Municipality, a place steeped in history and natural beauty. Today, we’re going to delve into its fascinating past, exploring its origins and the events that shaped it into the vibrant community it is today.

Silkeborg Municipality, as you see it today, emerged much later than the town of Silkeborg itself. The town’s roots stretch back to the 15th century, when a castle stood on the banks of the Gudenå River. This castle, later transformed into a royal hunting and fishing base, played a vital role in the region’s history.

As fate would have it, a paper mill, established in 1844, would become the catalyst for Silkeborg’s growth. It was a bold move, a gamble even, but one that paid off magnificently. With the Gudenå River providing cheap water power and the surrounding forests offering abundant raw materials, the paper mill thrived. The little settlement around it flourished too, with residents attracted by the new opportunities. The town was officially charted in 1900.

The 19th century was a period of significant transformation. Silkeborg witnessed the arrival of railroads and the development of new highways, making it more accessible and connecting it to the rest of Denmark. These infrastructure developments spurred economic growth, attracting a large number of people to the town, leading to an explosive population increase.

Silkeborg Municipality wasn’t formed until January 1, 2007, when it was created by the Municipal Reform that merged several smaller municipalities. Today, Silkeborg Municipality encompasses the town of Silkeborg and several surrounding villages, reflecting a rich tapestry of interconnected communities. It’s true that Silkeborg is the seat of the municipality, but the entire region, with its rolling hills, sparkling lakes, and dense forests, is truly magical.

The municipality boasts a diverse economy, built on a foundation of industries ranging from textiles and iron to administration and service. It’s also home to a significant number of banks, including Jyske Bank, Denmark’s third-largest bank, which is headquartered in Silkeborg.

However, perhaps the most appealing aspect of Silkeborg Municipality lies in its stunning natural beauty. This serene landscape is studded with numerous lakes, offering endless opportunities for water sports, fishing, and simply enjoying the peaceful setting. Its captivating countryside, filled with dense forests and iconic geological landmarks like Himmelbjerget, the third highest point in Denmark, draws nature lovers and hikers from all over the world.
