A seven-step stone staircase beckons. This is the Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii. Its restoration continues even now. Imagine stepping onto those worn stones. You are standing before a mosque steeped in Ottoman history. It dates back to the 18th century. The benefactor was Abdurrahman Ağa. He served Sultan Mustafa III as a squire.

Abdurrahman Ağa’s legacy extends beyond the Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii. He is buried in a private cemetery near the Yanık Ömer Gate. This is next to the Dedeler Lodge in Üsküdar. His death date is recorded as 1184 (1770). The mosque itself however holds a mystery. The original completion date plaque was removed. This date belonged to the poet Fehmi. His verse celebrated the mosque’s dedication as a place of worship. The verse mentions 1180 which translates to 1766-67.

The Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii isn’t alone. Nearby benefactors added a fountain. They also created a prayer area. A Bektashi lodge once stood close by. It was destroyed in 1241 (1826) along with other Bektashi lodges. A grain warehouse and a Nizam-ı Cedid Police Station were later built on the site. Twenty years later it became an Asakir-i Mansure building. The Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii stands as a testament to this shifting landscape.

The mosque’s simple elegance captivates. Its lower floor is a basement. A wooden narthex awaits above. A staircase leads to the imperial gallery. The rectangular stone structure is capped with a wooden roof and pulpit. The minaret’s base is cut stone. Its upper part is brick and plastered with cement. A sundial now sits on its base. An inscription is visible near the base. It reads “Resemeh Ali Muezzin The Mosque Cedid der-üs-kudar”.

The Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii’s history entwines with its surroundings. The Yarımca Baba Bektashi Lodge stood nearby. Evliya Çelebi’s travelogue mentions the lodge. He describes it as a dervish lodge at Öküz Limanı. Its existence predates the Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii by at least 170 years. The imperial gallery’s stone staircase was removed in 1965. The mosque receives light from both upper and lower windows. The gallery has no inscriptions.

The area surrounding the Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii has seen numerous changes. Hüseyin Avni Pasha removed much of the Yarımca Baba Tekke Cemetery. He built a fountain in its place. A small cemetery remains near the mosque. Sidika Hanım is buried here. She was the sister of Grand Vizier Mithat Pasha. Her death was in 1918. A boathouse across the road is also linked to Abdurrahman Ağa’s charity work. The Silahtar Abdurrahman Ağa Camii continues its silent vigil a testament to Istanbul’s vibrant past.
