Have you ever wondered what a mountain range is doing in the middle of a bustling metropolis? Here at the Sierra de Guadalupe, we unravel this intriguing tale. The Sierra de Guadalupe isn’t just a geographical feature. It’s a dormant volcano, a silent sentinel watching over Mexico City. Its presence is deeply intertwined with the city’s history and spiritual identity. The Sierra de Guadalupe straddles the border of Mexico City and the State of Mexico. Its highest peak, Picacho Moctezuma, reaches a height of 3,055 meters. This range is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, its last volcanic activity rumbling some 14 to 15 million years ago. Long before the Spanish arrived, the Aztecs worshipped the goddess Tonantzin at Tepeyac hill, a part of the Sierra. Later, the Sierra became associated with Our Lady of Guadalupe. According to tradition, Juan Diego witnessed a Marian apparition on Tepeyac hill. This event profoundly impacted the region’s spiritual landscape, eventually lending the Sierra its name. El Tepeyac National Park, nestled within the Sierra, was established in 1937 by President Lázaro Cárdenas, preserving a piece of this sacred ground. The Sierra de Guadalupe boasts a humid subtropical climate, with rainfall concentrated in the summer months. This unique environment supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. Native inhabitants include the Mexican pine snake, the American kestrel, the roadrunner, the opossum, and the bobcat. The Sierra’s slopes are also home to introduced species such as white-tailed deer, tapirs, and bison. Sadly, the Sierra de Guadalupe has faced environmental challenges. Deforestation has taken its toll, but reforestation efforts offer a glimmer of hope. Eucalyptus, pinus, cedrus, and casuarina trees now dot the landscape. The Sierra de Guadalupe isn’t just one mountain. It encompasses a series of hills, each with its own story. Among them are Cerro del Sombrero, Cerro de los Gachupines, Cerro del Chiquihuite, Cerro del Picacho Moctezuma, Cerro del Picacho El Fraile, Cerro del Tenayo, Cerro Petlecatl, and Cerro de la Calavera. Standing here, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadalupe, you can almost feel the weight of centuries. From ancient Aztec rituals to modern conservation efforts, the Sierra remains a powerful symbol of resilience and spiritual significance. Its presence reminds us that even in the heart of a metropolis, nature’s power endures.
