Envision Siedlung Strehlen, a neighborhood whispering tales of Dresden’s past. Siedlung Strehlen, also known as Postsiedlung, stands as a testament to a bygone era. It holds a special place in Dresden’s heart as a cultural monument. Built between 1927 and 1928, Siedlung Strehlen showcases the striking features of expressionist architecture. Designed by Paul Löffler, the settlement embodies this artistic movement. Think “expressive elements” shaping the very essence of Siedlung Strehlen. Notice the “ornamented corner designs,” the “narrow continuous window strips,” and the “recessed entrance areas.” These are all hallmarks of expressionist style. Originally built for postal workers, the “Postsiedlung” name reflects this history. Imagine eight three-story plastered buildings, arranged around a central courtyard. This courtyard, nestled within the streets of Lockwitzer Straße, Hugo-Bürkner-Straße, and Dohnaer Straße, once housed gardens. Picture residents tending to their plants, creating a vibrant community within Siedlung Strehlen. In January 1929, the final building was handed over by the “Heimstättengesellschaft Sachsen” GmbH, the company responsible for its construction. After German reunification in 1990, ownership of Siedlung Strehlen shifted from Deutsche Post to Deutsche Bundespost. Later, Deutsche Post AG, the legal successor, sold the buildings. Declared a cultural monument in 1991, Siedlung Strehlen has been under diverse ownership since 1999. During the 2000s, significant renovations breathed new life into parts of the settlement. Blocks I through IX were meticulously restored. This ensured that Siedlung Strehlen continues to stand proudly, a captivating blend of history and modern living. So, as you wander through Siedlung Strehlen, remember the postal workers who once called it home. Appreciate the architectural details that make it a unique expressionist gem in Dresden.
