Could a sculpture capture the essence of siblinghood? Right here in Lincoln Park, the Siblings Sculpture by Rosetta does just that. This bronze masterpiece, installed in 1997, depicts two mountain lions, their powerful forms intertwined yet distinct. The sculpture marks the former location of the Chicago Academy of Sciences. The academy moved to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in the mid-1990s. The building then became the administrative headquarters for the Lincoln Park Zoo. The Lincoln Park Zoological Society chose the Siblings Sculpture for a very specific reason: to signify this transition. Rosetta, a Colorado-based artist known for her feline sculptures, masterfully portrays the complex relationship between siblings. She depicts the mountain lions as young adults, still bonded but on the verge of independence. Soon, they will each carve their own territories, as is the nature of mountain lions and indeed, many wild animals. The Siblings Sculpture reminds us of the bittersweet balance between togetherness and individual growth. This theme resonates not only in the animal kingdom but also in our own lives and relationships.
