Nestled on the shore of Lake Minnetonka, Shorewood is a haven of charm and tranquility. Its history is intertwined with the very fabric of Minnesota, dating back to the Ice Age. The glacial melting that shaped the surrounding landscape, including Lake Minnetonka, paved the way for the arrival of Native Americans. Their language, Dakota, gave us the name “Lake Minnetonka,” which translates to “Big Waters.” This peaceful lake was, for many centuries, a vital resource for the Ojibwe and Dakota people. The land around Shorewood remained a rural community, with a focus on agriculture and leisurely pursuits, until the late 19th century. The arrival of the railroad facilitated a boom in tourism. Luxury hotels and inns sprouted up like flowers, drawing visitors from far and wide to experience the serenity of this picturesque area. A small group of determined residents, recognizing the need for a distinct community identity, decided to formally establish Shorewood in 1956. They realized that the surrounding area was in danger of being absorbed by neighboring towns and lost its unique character. Today, Shorewood has blossomed, not merely into a charming community, but a vibrant city with a rich history and a bright future.
