Contemplate this: what began here rippled through Japan. Shōfuku-ji Temple stands before us. It is not merely a temple. Shōfuku-ji is Japan’s first Zen temple.

Founded in 1195 by Eisai, Shōfuku-ji Temple marked a pivotal moment. Eisai, the founder of Japan’s Rinzai school, had returned from Sung China. Minamoto no Yoritomo supported him. He gave Eisai land to construct Shōfuku-ji Temple. The temple was built on the site of Hyaku-do. This chapel had been built by Chinese expatriates. Completed in 1204, Emperor Go-Toba honored Shōfuku-ji Temple. He did so with calligraphy for its Sanmon gate.

Imagine Hakata bustling around Shōfuku-ji Temple. At its peak, Shōfuku-ji Temple included 38 sub-temples and chapels. It was the central temple of Hakata. A market town named “Kannai” thrived within its grounds. Modern Hakata street names still echo this era.

Shōfuku-ji Temple also played a key role in diplomacy. It housed the shogunate’s official representative for Kyushu. Bilingual monks facilitated negotiations.

Fire devastated Shōfuku-ji Temple in 1563 during the Sengoku period. Though revived in 1570, it faced further destruction in 1574. Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s reconstruction of Hakata reduced its size in 1587. Kobayakawa Takakage and others helped rebuild Shōfuku-ji Temple.

Originally independent, Shōfuku-ji Temple became part of the Kennin-ji sect. Later, it joined the Myōshinji sect by order of Kuroda Nagamasa.

Note the Hakata-bei walls. These mud walls contain rocks and roof tiles. They were left scattered after battles. Shōfuku-ji Temple is one of the few places where Hakata-bei is preserved.

Consider the Sanmon gate. Shozaburo Iwasaki, a construction company founder, built it in 1911. Emperor Gotoba’s calligraphy adorns the entrance. The statue of Jyuroku-Rakanzo is located here. The wooden statue of Thousand-armed Kannon is here too. Keisen Tomita created the dragon painting on the ceiling.

Today, Shōfuku-ji Temple stands as a National Historic Site. Its buildings exemplify Zen temple design. The temple is a short walk from Gion Station. Shōfuku-ji offers a serene escape. It connects us to Japan’s Zen origins.
