Picture this A vibrant red torii gate beckoning you into the heart of Shoan-Inarijinja. This isn’t just any Inari shrine. This is Nishi-Takaido Shoan Inari Shrine. It stands as the guardian shrine of Shoan Village a testament to enduring faith and tradition.

Shoan-Inarijinja isn’t simply a place of worship it’s a living history book. Founded in 1665 it originally resided within the grounds of Enkoji Temple. When Enkoji Temple was abandoned around the Meiji Restoration the villagers refused to let their guardian shrine vanish. In 1936 they rebuilt it on the same site preserving its sacred legacy.

What truly sets Shoan-Inarijinja apart is its remarkable collection of white Inari fox statues. These aren’t your average kitsune figures. They are a unique feature of this particular shrine. Their presence speaks to a deeper spiritual connection a story passed down through generations.

Walk past the first torii gate. You’ll find a small shrine a hokora to your left. Inside rests the mummified body of a fox discovered under the floor of the old Enkoji Temple. The villagers believed this fox was a messenger of God. They enshrined it as a symbol of their enduring faith. This sacred object isn’t publicly displayed. It’s carefully preserved. Many smaller fox figurines are offered in its place. They are gifts from worshippers. These tokens serve as visible prayers.

North of the main compound lies a quiet graveyard. This is the final resting place for the head priests of Enkoji Temple. They are honored and remembered here. Their connection to Shoan-Inarijinja is irrefutable.

Shoan-Inarijinja holds more than just religious significance. It’s a place where history and community intertwine. The shrine stands as a beacon of perseverance and faith a vibrant reminder of the stories etched in the very stones beneath your feet. It’s a place where the past whispers secrets to the future.
