Shirley Methodist Church

A thriving community blossomed here for 75 years. Welcome to Shirley Methodist Church. This isn’t just any church. This is a place where history unfolds. It’s a place where faith took root. It all began in the 1920s. Shirley was booming. But there was only one parish church. A group of Methodists saw the need. They bought land. Their dream was a church for this growing community. Thirteen members from nearby Addiscombe Methodist Church worked tirelessly. Finally in February 1931 the first service took place. Only 38 people attended that first service. That small group was the seed of something far greater. The church grew. It became a vital part of Shirley’s life. By 2006 nearly 180 members filled its pews. It became part of Croydon Methodist Circuit. It’s one of nine churches in Churches Together in Shirley. This network works to transform the community. Long-time member Lucy Rogers remembers visiting as a 12-year-old girl. She joined guides. She joined other groups. The church became a constant in her life. She explains “It’s always had a strong community. That’s why I stayed.” Reverend Maurice Hart was the first minister. He’s pictured in old photographs. He helped build the church’s strong foundation. The original structure still stands. Today Shirley Methodist Church continues its mission. It offers weekly worship. It provides pastoral care. It supports the homeless through the Floating Shelter.
