Imagine Shiqi as a canvas. It is painted with strokes of history and modern vibrancy. Today we will explore this subdistrict in Zhongshan city.
Shiqi, once known as Shekki, sits at the foot of Yandun Mountain. The Qi River flows through it. This area of 22.72 square kilometers is home to 257,472 people. Shiqi is not just a place it is a hub of industry and commerce.
But how did Shiqi get its name? Some say it was from rock embankments built to prevent floods. Others believe it came from jagged boulders along the ancient Shiqi Sea. However, the most plausible explanation links it to Shiqi Mountain. This mountain was once rich in stones. These stones were used for construction since the Song Dynasty. Over time, the stone mountain became an earth-piled one.
Interestingly, Shiqi’s name has deeper cultural roots. Ancient people associated it with Xi Qi. Xi Qi is the cradle of the Zhou Dynasty. They replaced one character with another. This was done for an auspicious sign. This connection explains the names of local streets like Fengming Road and Shanfeng Road.
Shiqi is also known as Tiecheng or Iron City. This nickname gained popularity after Xiangshan County was established in 1152.
Local life here is steeped in the Shiqi dialect. It is a Yue dialect related to Standard Cantonese. This unique language adds to Shiqi’s distinct character.
Economically, Shiqi thrives. National firms dealing with finance and information services have moved here. The Guangdong Zhongshan Industrial Park, a significant industrial center, calls Shiqi home. In 2019, retail sales here ranked first among township-level divisions in Zhongshan.
Education is also a priority in Shiqi. The Zhongshan Institute of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China is located here.

National Highway 105 and the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway pass through it. The Zhongshan North railway station provides intercity rail access.
