“West Gate Archway” whispers the weathered stone. This isn’t just any archway. This is the West Gate Archway of the Sun Yat-sen University’s old campus in Guangzhou. It stands as a silent witness to a rich history. A history spanning from 1935 to 1952. A history etched not just in stone but in the very fabric of this city.

The Sun Yat-sen University. Founded in 1924. It was originally located near the present-day Guangdong Provincial Museum. However its rapid growth necessitated a move. The West Gate Archway marks the entrance to the new campus. A campus built on the land of Shipai Village. A collaboration between the university and the village ensured a harmonious coexistence. The villagers received water rights and guaranteed university enrollment spots each year.

The construction of the new campus was ambitious. It was divided into three phases spanning six years. The first phase was completed in 1934. The agricultural engineering college moved into its new building. The next phase was delayed by funding issues. Mr. Xiang Qianrong a university official personally intervened. He secured additional funds from various sources. The second phase was completed in 1935. All colleges except the medical college and its affiliated hospital moved to the new campus. The final phase began in 1936. However this was also hampered by the cost overruns of construction companies. Construction was slowed. Then the Second Sino-Japanese War interrupted construction entirely.

The West Gate Archway along with the South Gate Archway was damaged during the war. Both were later restored. The inscription on the West Gate Archway “Loyalty Love Faith and Peace” reflects the ideals of the university’s founders. But these words were later obscured. The revolutionary fervor of the Cultural Revolution covered them. The original inscription on the West Gate Archway was restored in 2013.

The Sun Yat-sen University West Gate Archway. More than just an entrance. A symbol of resilience perseverance and a testament to the enduring legacy of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. It’s a story written in stone a history waiting to be discovered. A journey through time standing right here before you.
