Ever wondered about the first true office building at Aarhus Harbour? That’s Shipping Huset right here. Built in 1985 by United Shipping Agencies A/S also known as Uniship it marked a significant moment in Aarhus’s history.
Before Shipping Huset existed Uniship the largest container customer of the harbour operated from the BP-Huset. However space became an issue. They needed more room. The ideal location was Hveensgade near the container terminal in the North Harbour. That’s where Shipping Huset was built.
On November 8 1985 the grand opening took place. The building boasted 2850 square meters spread across five floors. Many shipping companies moved in. Around 125 to 150 employees worked there. It was quite the buzz.
Shipping Huset wasn’t just for shipping firms. Later it housed the Bylivshus a building for the local council’s urban life initiatives and even a storage area called ‘Bylageret’. The building is still leased out to many firms. These leases continue until the end of 2026. The building stands on plot E part of the Inner Aarhus Ø development plan.
In 2022 Henning Larsen Architects and Rambøll a renowned engineering firm moved in. They occupied the entire fourth floor. They created a hub for innovation research projects and collaboration. This shows how Shipping Huset has continued to evolve. It is still an important location in Aarhus even today.
So next time you’re in Aarhus remember this unassuming building. Shipping Huset is a testament to the city’s maritime history its growth and its ongoing evolution. It’s more than just an office building. It’s a piece of Aarhus’s story.
