Whispers of ancient secrets linger here at Shingu Shrine. A place of quiet contemplation it sits on a hill overlooking the bustling city.

Shingu Shrine a significant cultural landmark holds a rich history. It was once part of the grand Choraku-ji Temple a testament to the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. The shrine’s precise founding date remains a mystery lost to time. Its current location dates back to 1716 when the shrine building was relocated after Choraku-ji Temple was abandoned.

Two majestic trees once stood sentinel at the shrine’s entrance. A yew tree and a Japanese yew tree. Sadly the yew tree perished in 2013. The remaining Japanese yew is remarkable. It’s one of the largest in Hiroshima Prefecture. It survived Typhoon No 19 in 1991 that destroyed a similar tree at Matsukasa Kannon. Its survival is a testament to its resilience. The Japanese yew’s wood is highly valued. It is resistant to insect damage. This makes it an excellent building material. Many shrines and temples across the prefecture boast these trees but this one is truly special.

The impressive size of the Japanese yew is awe-inspiring. It stands 16.5 meters tall. Its trunk circumference measures 223 centimeters at chest height. Its branches spread impressively reaching 7 meters east 6.4 meters west 6.5 meters south and 6.9 meters north. The Japanese yew’s presence adds to the shrine’s spiritual aura. Its longevity connects the present to the distant past.
