“A school with a hot spring inside?” you might ask. Yes, right here, where the Hiroshima City Funakoshi Nishi Elementary School once stood, a hot spring well was discovered in 1949. Located in the Saeki Ward of Hiroshima on land that was once part of Funakoshi Village, the Hiroshima City Funakoshi Nishi Elementary School served its community for over 150 years. The school’s history goes back to 1873 when it was known as the Shokoji Temple School. Over the years, the school went through several name changes, reflecting its growth and the evolving educational landscape. In 1905, it was renamed Kami Funakoshi Island Jinjo Elementary School after merging with another village school. The school saw further changes as it became a national school in 1941. Finally, in 1969, it was designated as the Hiroshima City Funakoshi Nishi Elementary School, a name it held until its closure in 2024. Although the Hiroshima City Funakoshi Nishi Elementary School now stands silent, its story lives on. The discovery of the hot spring on its grounds adds a unique element to its history, a hidden treasure unearthed long after the school first opened its doors.
