What began as a small group of worshippers has blossomed into the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. This church stands as a beacon of faith in Dallas. Founded in 1911 by Reverend Hartford, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church started in a humble three-room house in Oak Cliff. This space served as a hub for campaigns, inviting people to worship together.
Early members included Rev. Hartford. Carrie Daniels and Willie Mae King were also founding members. The early days were difficult. After Carrie Daniels passed away, Rev. Hartford continued to lead until he resigned.
Several pastors followed. Reverend Jordan served briefly. Reverend Hood also led the congregation for a short period. Services were even suspended until 1912. The early years of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church were marked by challenges.
In 1913, Reverend S.G. Guster stepped in. He accepted the invitation to lead a Watch Night service on December 31, 1912. During his nine-year tenure, Shiloh flourished. Membership grew, and the sanctuary became too small. Plans were made to build a new structure. A lot was purchased and a new building was completed in 1922.
After Rev. Guster’s departure in 1924, Shiloh faced another period of change. Several pastors served including Rev. R.P. Wilson, Rev. J.L. Lampley, Rev. Johnson O.C. Turner and Rev. D.C. Mitchell.
In 1924, Reverend H.J. James became the pastor. Under his leadership, the church constructed in 1922 was eventually burned. Rev. James resigned in 1943 leaving many members discouraged.
Then, in May 1943, Reverend M.H. Hunter was chosen as pastor. His leadership proved remarkable. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church prospered spiritually, financially and numerically. The congregation grew significantly. The members wanted a new sanctuary. In 1967, property was purchased. Construction began in August 1969. On April 26, 1970, the congregation entered the new sanctuary. Rev. Hunter led the church until his death in July 1972.
Growth continued under Reverend John Thigpyn. He was elected in August 1972. A church bus was purchased. The Educational Building was renamed the M.H. Hunter Educational Building.
In October 1977, Rev. A.T. Ellison took over. He reorganized ministries, constructed the Educational Building and Fellowship Hall. The pulpit and choir stand were remodeled. With his wife’s help, the first Shiloh Scholarship Committee was formed.
Rev. Raymond Douglas became pastor in 1999. He revitalized the community and the Outreach Department. In 2001, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church started a Food and Clothes Pantry.
After Pastor Douglas passed away, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church chose Rev. Johnnie R. Bradley in 2006. He implemented discipleship ministries and remodeled the Fellowship Hall. The Shiloh Bible Institute was established. A church website was created as an evangelism tool.
Today, Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community in Dallas. The church impacts the next faith-based generation. It offers various ministries and streams sermons live on Facebook. Dr. Bradley leads with Godly wisdom. He believes in people experiencing the transformational power of God. Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church remains a vital part of the Dallas community.
