How about a journey through time at Shiliupu? This historic wharf connects Shanghai’s vibrant cityscape with the Huangpu River. Shiliupu Wharf stands as a testament to Shanghai’s transformation. It changed from a bustling port to a modern hub.

Once the busiest port in old Shanghai, Shiliupu is now a must-visit destination. It provides sightseeing cruises and riverside leisure. Imagine French merchant ships loading wares here in the 1920s. They called it Quai de France or French Bund.

Shiliupu dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Back then, it served as a vital trading port. Today, its historical significance meets modern amenities. Visitors gain insights into Shanghai’s maritime past. They also enjoy contemporary comforts.

Ready for unforgettable views? Step aboard a Huangpu River cruise. Experience Shanghai’s dazzling skyline, with landmarks like the Oriental Pearl Tower. Evening cruises are magical with the city illuminated.

Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade. Breathe in the fresh air. Capture stunning photos of the waterfront. Shiliupu offers an accessible and convenient location. It is minutes from the Bund. It is a perfect addition to any Shanghai itinerary. Its proximity to landmarks makes it ideal for city exploration.

Shiliupu emerged around 1023 during the Northern Song Dynasty. Fishermen, farmers, and salt traders exchanged goods here. The name Shiliupu appeared between 1850 and 1875 in the Qing Dynasty. Shanghai was divided into protected market areas. Shiliupu, the 16th pu, was the largest.

By the early Qing Dynasty, Shanghai became a major coastal hub. Vessels carried goods from Europe, Japan, and Vietnam. They docked at Shiliupu.

Before the First Opium War, Shiliupu had brick and stone wharfs. By 1866, fixed wooden wharfs were built. In the early 20th century, steel piers became the norm. By 1947, 48 piers clustered in Shiliupu. They handled wood, grain, fruit, and pottery.

The area became a notorious red light district. Opium dens, casinos, and brothels flourished. Du Yuesheng, an apprentice at a fruit stall in Shiliupu, became notorious later in life.

In its heyday, 40,000 passengers used it every day. A ship left the dock every 30 minutes. Passengers crowded the dock to go home for the Chinese Spring Festival.

In those days, there was a saying: There are brands on Damalu Road and money at Shiliupu. This reflected Shiliupu’s prosperity in the 1950s and 1960s.

The Shiliupu Passenger Service Dock closed in September 2003. In December 2004, a controlled explosion demolished Shiliupu Wharf.

Today, Shiliupu has been revamped to attract tourists and residents. A new sightseeing platform and ship dock have been built. The 460-meter-long riverside platform is an extension of the Bund’s waterfront walkway.

So, as you stand here at Shiliupu, remember its rich history. Think of the fishermen, traders, and travelers who passed through this gateway. Shiliupu continues to evolve. It remains an essential stop for anyone exploring Shanghai.
