Did you know that the Shield of Faith Church of God and Christ has deep roots? Its story begins far from here. In May 1983 Weldon and Kathleen Townsend completed Bible School in Midland Michigan. The Lord then guided them to Saginaw Michigan. He gave them the name Shield of Faith Ministries. They chose this name because their location was in Shields Michigan a part of Saginaw. They needed faith to shield themselves from life’s challenges.
On May 6 1990 the Shield of Faith Church of God and Christ held its first service. This was in a small building. It was the first of three buildings on two acres of land. They had the option to buy twelve more acres and two more buildings in the future. The church quickly grew. In the fall of 1990 they started a K-12 Christian academy. It ran for twelve years educating many children.
In 1995 a spiritual outpouring impacted the church. It was part of a worldwide revival. The church experienced a deeper connection with God. Members focused less on personal agendas and more on building God’s kingdom. The church realized the importance of unity. They saw themselves as part of a larger body of Christ in Saginaw.
The Shield of Faith Church of God and Christ’s journey has been challenging. It’s also been deeply rewarding. The church’s growth and success came through God’s grace and mercy.
