“Did you ever hear of a park built for immigrants?” a young boy asked his mother, pointing towards the sprawling green expanse of Sherman Park. Sherman Park. A place of respite and recreation. It stands proudly in Chicago’s New City neighborhood, a testament to thoughtful urban planning and a tribute to John B. Sherman, the founder of Chicago’s Union Stock Yards and Burnham’s father-in-law. Opened in 1905, Sherman Park was designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm, along with the celebrated Chicago architect, Daniel Burnham. The park was specifically designed to enrich the lives of the immigrant, working-class residents of the surrounding neighborhood. Imagine a time when Chicago’s population boomed, but green spaces lagged behind. Sherman Park, all sixty acres of it, was part of a revolutionary system of parks designed to address this very issue. The park boasts an impressive array of facilities. Two gymnasiums, a fitness center, a swimming pool, and ample outdoor space for basketball, tennis, baseball, soccer, and football offer something for everyone. But Sherman Park is more than just fields and courts. It holds a unique piece of Chicago’s artistic history. In 1912, eight students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago graced the walls of the Sherman Park fieldhouse with a series of murals known as the American History Series. These murals depict pivotal moments in American history. From the founding of Jamestown to the Marquette-Joliet Expedition, these artworks added a layer of cultural richness to the park. Over time, soot and varnish obscured the murals’ vibrancy. Thankfully, in 2004, a joint effort between the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Conservation Center brought these historic paintings back to life. The restoration, completed in 2005, ensured that these visual narratives continue to inspire and educate visitors to Sherman Park. As you stroll through the park, take a moment to appreciate the foresight of its creators. They envisioned a space where community could flourish. They dreamed of a place where immigrants, new to this land, could find a sense of belonging. Sherman Park stands as a realization of that vision, a vibrant hub of activity and a testament to the power of green spaces to enrich lives.
