Across the Yarra River, Shaws Bridge gracefully connects Studley Park and Yarra Bend Park. Shaws Bridge replaced Kane’s Bridge in 1935. Kane’s Bridge had been destroyed by a devastating flood in 1934. Before the bridges, the area was still a popular spot. People enjoyed picnics and boating along the Yarra River. The Studley Park Boathouse, originally Burns Boat Shed, has witnessed all of this activity since 1863. It’s the oldest continuously operating boathouse on the Yarra. The boathouse has endured floods and changing times. It thrived during the interwar years when boating reached its peak popularity. It survived a decline in popularity mid-century as cars became more common. Shaws Bridge now offers a perfect vantage point to admire the boathouse and its resilient history. The bridge itself is a testament to the enduring appeal of this picturesque area. It symbolises the connection between the past and present along the Yarra River.
