Did sharks attend classes in Victorian times? Of course not. But right here at Budapest Zoo’s Holnemvolt Castle, something magical exists: the Shark School. It isn’t a school for sharks with tiny desks and underwater chalkboards. It’s a place for us to learn about these fascinating creatures. The Shark School opened relatively recently as a training ground for sharks before they move to the larger Pannon Park biodome. Three saltwater pools hold 30,000, 90,000, and an impressive 660,000 liters of water, mimicking the sharks’ ocean home. The warm water for these pools comes directly from the nearby Széchenyi Thermal Bath. The design is a whimsical blend of steampunk and Captain Nemo’s lair, a fitting backdrop for observing these magnificent predators. Here, you can watch divers interacting with the sharks. You can even try some zookeeper tasks, getting closer to these often-misunderstood animals. You’ll see blacktip reef sharks, tawny nurse sharks, zebra sharks, and even stingrays, guitarfish, and batfish. The Shark School also raises baby sharks, teaching them to coexist with other species and acclimate to the presence of divers and, eventually, doctors. So, next time you picture a school of sharks, imagine this unique place. It’s where we shed our misconceptions and marvel at the wonders of the underwater world, right here at the Shark School in Budapest Zoo.
