Imagine its origins. Built in 247 AD during the Wu Kingdom’s reign. It stood beside the Suzhou Creek a tranquil scene now replaced by Shanghai’s bustling streets. Then in 1216 during the Song Dynasty the temple found its current home. It’s been rebuilt many times. The original temple was razed during the Cultural Revolution. It became a plastic factory. But the spirit of Jing’an Temple endured. In 1983 it was reborn. Rebuilt to its former glory. It now stands as a symbol of Shanghai’s enduring spirit. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of survival. A story of faith.
Look closely. Three Southern-style halls each with its own courtyard grace the grounds. The Mahavira Hall the main hall is the heart of the temple. Inside sits a magnificent 3.8-meter jade Buddha. It’s the largest sitting jade Buddha in the country. A breathtaking sight.
Explore the Guanyin Hall. A 6.2-meter tall camphor wood statue of the goddess stands majestically. It weighs 5 metric tons a testament to the skill of its creators.
Don’t miss the Ming Dynasty copper bell. This 3.5-ton wonder still rings out its ancient message. Even older are stone Buddhas. They date back to the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589 AD).
Jing’an Temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s an art gallery. It houses paintings by renowned masters like Chu Zhishan Zhang Daqian and Wen Zhenming. Their works add another layer of beauty and significance to this sacred space.
The temple even boasts a Mandala of the Two Realms. A sacred artifact enshrined on the upper floor. Master Chisong the temple’s abbot re-established the temple under Tangmi Buddhist tradition. He installed the Mandala in 1953. In 2009 a 15-ton silver statue of Buddha Rudra joined the collection. It is cast in pure silver. More than ten 3-ton silver statues of Bodhisattvas and disciples were added to the Daxiongbao Hall.
