Craving a quiet escape in a bustling city? Shanghai Book City beckons. This isn’t just a bookstore. It’s a cultural landmark. It has history and a modern design.

Shanghai Book City sits on Fuzhou Road. This road has been a cultural street for over a century. The location is 465 Fuzhou Road. The bookstore is easily accessible by metro. You can take lines 1, 2, or 8 to People’s Square Station. From there it is just a 20-minute walk.

Let’s step inside Shanghai Book City. This super-large retail bookstore spans over 10,000 square meters. It is Shanghai’s first of its kind. The selection is vast. Over 120,000 varieties of books are here. These come from more than 500 publishing houses.

The books cover every topic imaginable. You’ll find practical life books and literature. There are books on social sciences and cultural education. Children’s books are also available. Explore sections on science, technology, and art. The store also offers books from Hong Kong, Taiwan and original foreign language books.

After a two-year renovation, Shanghai Book City reopened in October 2023. The redesign includes three towering atriums. These create small cultural squares. Events will be held in these spaces.

The ground floor welcomes you with a public reading space. There is also a special exhibition area. The second floor features literature, audio-visual products and electronic books. Public information is also available here.

Venture to the third floor for philosophy, politics, and economics books. You can also find military, law, and business administration books here. History and geography books are also on this floor. The fourth floor offers language, foreign language and teaching books. Find books on cultural education, sports, and children’s books as well.

Industrial technology, computers, and medicine await you on the fifth floor. Agriculture and natural science books are here too. Art design, audio-visual art, and foreign albums are on the sixth floor. There is also a lecture hall and the Friends of the Book City Club. The seventh floor hosts an exhibition center. A film and television hall and an electrified teaching center are also here.

The architect of the renovation aimed to create a cultural complex. It centers around knowledge sharing. The red “Book Mountain” at the entrance serves as a stage. It is adaptable for book launches and exhibitions.

The building’s facade is another key feature. Perforated aluminum panels create a crystal-like illusion. This gives the building a unique texture.

More than just a place to buy books, Shanghai Book City offers an experience. It is a space to explore knowledge and culture. Spend an afternoon browsing its shelves. Attend a lecture. Or simply relax with a good book. Shanghai Book City is a destination for every book lover and curious mind.
