In Mexico City’s vibrant tapestry, where ancient echoes meet modern aspirations, stands Shalom. But what makes this Shalom so special? Shalom offers an intimate glimpse into Mexico City’s Jewish heritage.

Mexico has welcomed Jewish people since the 14th century. Spanish Jews sought refuge here from the Spanish Inquisition. They found a familiar cultural and linguistic environment in this Spanish colony.

However, the Spanish Inquisition reached Mexico in 1571. Jews faced forced conversion or even death. Many became “conversos”, fully converting to Catholicism. Others were “marranos”, secretly practicing Judaism. These Crypto-Jews preserved traditions in secret. Some Mexicans light candles on Friday nights now. This echoes the Jewish custom of lighting Shabbat candles.

Queen Esther’s story resonated deeply with Crypto-Jews. She hid her Jewish identity to save her people. Similarly, they hid their faith to protect themselves. The Fast of Esther became very important, even more so than Yom Kippur. Queen Esther’s image appears in Mexican churches.

Jewish immigration surged in the 20th century. People arrived from Europe and the Ottoman Empire. They brought Yiddish and Arabic to Mexico City. Jewish life flourished especially in the city center.

Once, Jesus Maria Street was lined with Jewish businesses. You could find kosher butchers and Jewish day schools there. By the early 20th century, four main Jewish communities existed. These were Ashkenazi, Sephardic from the Balkans, Syrian Jews from Aleppo and Syrian Jews from Damascus. They built the city’s first synagogue in 1923. But they soon split due to a disagreement.

Today, about 80% of Mexico’s Jewish population lives in Mexico City. Jewish life is centered in Polanco and Lomas de Chapultepec. You will find kosher restaurants like Dog’s Bar and Tamar Jerusalem Kitchen.

The Jews of Mexico are a close-knit community. Around 90% of their children attend Jewish day schools. Intermarriage is rare.

Most Jewish Mexican high school graduates spend three months in Israel. This is part of a program called Hagshama. It aims to strengthen their connection to Israel.

As you stand before Shalom, remember this rich history. It is a story of resilience, adaptation and faith. It shows how Jewish culture has intertwined with Mexican culture. Shalom stands as a symbol of this enduring legacy. It connects the past with the present. It enriches the cultural mosaic of Mexico City.
