Three acres of land. A gift. Or was it a purchase? Shady Grove Baptist Church stands before you a testament to faith resilience and community.

Shady Grove Baptist Church in Dallas Texas boasts a rich history. Its story begins in the late 1800s. A three-acre tract was deeded to the church. This land became the foundation for what would become a place of worship for generations.

The church’s official organization happened on September 10 1888. Bro Henry Money guided its creation. Early services were held with the Shady Grove Methodist Church. This arrangement continued until the Baptist church’s own building was finished. In October 1891 the new Shady Grove Baptist Church was dedicated. Bro H B Pender officiated the ceremony. The initial cost of the building was a mere $336.43. It took five years to pay off this debt. For many years the two churches were known as the Twin Churches. They were built remarkably alike.

Seven founding families called R D Campbell as their first pastor. Deacons were ordained in 1896. These included J A Stovall B M Downing and W J Morgan. The church’s growth continued steadily over the decades. The Sunday School started in October 1915. The Training Union followed in January 1953. The church transitioned to full-time operation in May 1955.

The 1950s and 60s saw significant construction. New Sunday School rooms and an auditorium were added. The men of the church did much of the work themselves. The new auditorium dedicated in March 1956 by Bro Weldon Drake included stained glass windows. The construction cost was $7366.39. A new wing followed in August 1960 and a parsonage in 1963.

Shady Grove Baptist Church continued to thrive. In November 2006 a new Family Life Center opened. Bro Benny Chaffin played a key role in its construction. He also spoke at its dedication service. Dr James Ralson became pastor in January 2007. By 2012 the Family Life Center was too small. The church chose to build a new sanctuary. Construction was completed in 2013. The older auditorium was remodeled. It now serves as the Youth Building. The old Sunday School room is Shady Grove’s radio station KSCG 92.9 FM.

The church’s story continues to unfold. Each addition each pastor each member adds to the rich legacy of Shady Grove Baptist Church. It stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and the enduring power of community. It’s more than a building. It is a living testament. It is a story still being written.
