“Sali Tekkesi Mescidi” you might hear someone call it but we know it as the Şeyh Raşid Camii. This modest mosque holds a unique story within Istanbul’s rich tapestry of religious sites. It is located at the corner of Deniz Abdal Çeşmesi Street.

Imagine this area many years ago. It was before the Şeyh Raşid Camii became a mosque. This building served as a Kadiri tekke. Tekkes were central to Sufi religious orders. It functioned as a place for spiritual retreat.

The exact construction date of the Şeyh Raşid Camii remains unknown. Historical records offer limited clues. However, the building’s transformation into a mosque occurred later. It was around 1974.

The mosque derives its name from a significant figure. Raşid Efendi was a sheikh of the Tarikat. He performed religious duties within this building. Thus, the Şeyh Raşid Camii became its name.

Notice the architecture. The Şeyh Raşid Camii is a concrete structure. Its roof features wide eaves covered with tiles. The facade facing Günaydın Street has three long windows. On the Deniz Abdal Çeşmesi Street side are two rows of windows one above the other.

Inside the Şeyh Raşid Camii the mihrab is made of plaster. The minbar and the kürsü are crafted from wood. The ceiling is concrete. The women’s section has a single wooden column supporting it.

The Şeyh Raşid Camii covers 96 square meters. Its courtyard spans 45 square meters. The minaret has an unusual design. It appears like a cup hanging on the entrance wall.

An inscription above the door bears the date 1338 in the Islamic calendar. This corresponds to 1922. However, this date likely refers to a renovation or restoration.

Also note the small cemetery near the Şeyh Raşid Camii. A fountain stands on the side of the mosque. A panel displays photographs and sayings.

Take a moment to appreciate the Şeyh Raşid Camii. It transitioned from a tekke to a mosque. It is a testament to Istanbul’s evolving religious landscape. It embodies the enduring legacy of faith.
