Have you heard of the Islanders? They’re not from some faraway tropical paradise. They’re the generations of families who’ve called the Isle of Dogs home, long before the gleaming towers of Canary Wharf appeared. Seven Mills Primary School sits right in the heart of this historic community. Let’s step back in time to 1967. The Barkantine Estate was rising from the ashes of post-war London, promising a “modern and spacious environment”. At its core, a temporary primary school emerged, and that was the beginning of Seven Mills Primary School. The school took its name from seven windmills that once stood proudly on the Isle of Dogs, each bearing the name of a local mill owner: Brown, Smith, Baker, Chimm, and Ward. Can you picture those sails turning against the sky? Seven Mills Primary School has been witness to incredible change. From the bustling docks to the financial boom of Canary Wharf, it has remained a constant in the Islanders’ lives. The school has seen its own share of history too. In 1996, the IRA bombing at South Quay shook the very foundations of Seven Mills, shattering the hall windows. Yet, the school persevered, a testament to the resilience of the community it serves. Today, Seven Mills Primary School welcomes a new generation of Islanders, nurturing them in a vibrant learning environment. It continues to play a vital role, connecting the past with the future, right here on the Isle of Dogs.
