Gazing at Seven Kings Methodist Church, imagine the bustling crowds that once gathered here. Seven Kings Methodist Church stands as a testament to the rapid growth of Ilford. In the late 19th century, Ilford’s population exploded, rising from 10,000 in 1891 to a staggering 40,000 just ten years later. This growth, coupled with the development around Seven Kings station, spurred the Forest Gate Circuit of the United Methodist Free Church to establish a presence here. Land was secured southeast of the station in November 1900. The church, designed by George and Reginald Palmer Baines, was built in two phases. The first phase, completed in 1905, included the nave, aisles, tower, south porch, and the basement schoolroom. Notice the red brick laid in Flemish bond with stone banding and the distinctive slate roof. The south porch boasts a four-centered arch with decorative ballflower stops and a beautiful traceried tympanum. Admire the elaborate Art Nouveau strap hinges on the plank doors, a unique touch. The three-stage tower, complete with gargoyles and a metal-shingled spire, adds to the church’s striking presence. The interior of Seven Kings Methodist Church is equally impressive. The hammer-beam roof, supported by timber pillars with moulded capitals, is a sight to behold. Look for the Art Nouveau details, like the heart-shaped cut-outs on the pew ends and the brass fittings. The church’s history is intertwined with the story of A.E. Williams, a prominent member and biographer of Dr. Barnardo. The church’s name evolved over time, reflecting the merging of various Methodist groups. It began as the Seven Kings United Methodist Church in 1907 and finally became Seven Kings Methodist Church in 1934. The continued growth of the Sunday school led to the addition of a detached Institute in 1931, further cementing Seven Kings Methodist Church’s role in the community. As you leave Seven Kings Methodist Church, remember its story of growth, adaptation, and community service, a reflection of the changing times and the enduring spirit of faith.
