Seven Holy Founders Church. A name that echoes with a rich history. Let’s unravel the captivating story of this sacred place in Calumet Park, Illinois. Seven Holy Founders Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith, devotion, and the remarkable journey of seven men who became known as the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order. These weren’t priests initially. They were successful Florentine businessmen. Buonfiglio, Giovanni, Bartolomeo, Ricovero, Benedetto, Gherardino, and Alessio. They shared a profound devotion to the Virgin Mary, especially in her sorrows related to Jesus’ Passion.
In 1233, while praying together on the Feast of the Assumption, something extraordinary happened at Seven Holy Founders. Each of the seven men experienced a vision of Mary. She called them to a life devoted to religious service. At first, each believed the vision was personal. As they shared their experiences, they realized the profound connection. Mary had called them collectively. This shared vision propelled them to leave their prosperous lives and embark on a spiritual journey.
They sought guidance from the Franciscans and retreated into seclusion. In 1244, another vision occurred. Mary appeared again, this time presenting them with their distinctive black habits. She instructed them to follow the Rule of St. Augustine and establish the Order of the Servants of Mary, or the Servites. Seven Holy Founders Church embodies the spirit of these seven men.
This order quickly spread across Europe. They dedicated themselves to serving others. Their work focused on preaching and parish missions. They inspired both active and contemplative branches, further extending their influence. The Servites even established the Marianum in Rome. It is a renowned faculty devoted to Mariology.
The Seven Holy Founders were eventually canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888. Interestingly, their exact dates of death remain unknown. However, in 1649, during renovations at Monte Senario, where the Servites began their community life, the remains of seven bodies were discovered beneath an altar. These relics are now enshrined in a dedicated chapel at the Monte Senario Monastery. So, the next time you attend Mass at Seven Holy Founders Church, remember the seven men whose shared vision and devotion gave rise to a global order dedicated to serving Mary and her Son. Their legacy continues to inspire and resonate within these sacred walls.
