Did you know Setiabudi is more than just a district in South Jakarta? It is a place named after a hero. This area pulses with history and modern life. It is part of Jakarta’s Golden Triangle. This triangle is the heart of business here.

Today, we explore Setiabudi. It is named after Ernest Douwes Dekker. He was also known as Danudirdja Setiabudi. He was an Indonesian hero with mixed heritage. His father was Dutch. His mother was Sundanese. Despite his Dutch background, he fought for Indonesia’s independence.

Setiabudi holds a special place in Jakarta’s history. After Indonesia became independent, Setiabudi was among the first housing areas. It is the oldest neighborhood of its kind here. Its buildings are some of the oldest still standing. Back then, Setiabudi was one of the first neighborhoods with direct access to Sudirman Road. Bendungan Hilir was the other.

Planning for Setiabudi began in the 1950s. Most of it was done by the 1960s. This work paved the way for Kuningan Road.

Look around you at the modern skyline. Setiabudi is divided into eight subdistricts. Each one has its own postal code. You have Setiabudi, Karet, and Karet Semanggi. Also Karet Kuningan, Kuningan Timur, and Menteng Atas. Finally, Pasar Manggis and Guntur.

The district is bordered by several key roads and waterways. The Cideng River marks the east. Menteng Pulo Road also forms part of the eastern boundary. A flood channel defines the north. Jalan Jenderal Sudirman is to the west. Jalan Jenderal Gatot Subroto lies to the south.

Mega Kuningan is within Setiabudi. It is filled with high-rise buildings. It is part of Jakarta’s Golden Triangle. Sadly, Mega Kuningan has seen dark days. The JW Marriott hotel bombing in 2003 happened here. The Australian embassy bombing in Jakarta in 2004 also occurred here. The 2009 JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton bombings added to its tragic history.

Rasuna Epicentrum is another important area. It spans 53.6 hectares. It includes residences, offices, and hotels. Hospitals, places of worship, and sports facilities are here too. You can also find shopping, entertainment, and education.

Don’t forget Pasar Rumput Market. It is a bustling hub of local trade.

Setiabudi is a blend of old and new. It is a place where history meets the modern world. From its origins as a pioneering housing area to its current status as a business center, Setiabudi reflects Jakarta’s dynamic spirit. As you leave Setiabudi, remember the hero it is named after. Think about the history beneath your feet.
